The Republicans have until September 30th to repeal and replace Obamacare with 51 votes. If a plan is approved, it will go the House for a vote before that date. Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) introduced their last ditch attempt at repeal last week and it is gaining momentum.

The bill is even worse than the last Trumpcare, slashing Medicaid and ending federal subsidies for premiums. The bill also gives states the authority to allow insurers to charge prohibitive premiums to people with pre-existing conditions.

In trying to beat the September 30th deadline to repeal the ACA with only 51 votes, Republicans would have to vote with only a preliminary CBO score, with no estimates of how many will lose coverage, premiums or effect on the deficit. To address concerns about “regular process” raised by Senator John McCain (R-AZ), the Senate Republicans have scheduled a sham hearing before the Homeland Security committee, which has nothing to do with healthcare.

It is important to contact both your House member as, if the Senate passes the bill, it is expected the House will be asked to pass it “as is” before the September 30th deadline. Some Republican representatives who voted for the first Trumpcare bill have serious concerns about Graham-Cassidy.

We need an overwhelming number of calls, letters and pressure on our members of Congress to defeat Trumpcare once and for all. The bill is a potential death sentence for sick and vulnerable Americans. Voting on the bill without a full CBO score and full hearing is reckless. Instead, Congress should pass a bipartisan bill to stabilize the exchanges and repair the ACA.

GOVERNORS: OPPOSE THE GRAHAM-CASSIDY ACA REPEAL
September 30th is the last day to repeal the Affordable Care Act using the budget reconciliation process which requires only a simple majority to pass in the Senate. Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) have proposed a new, last-minute ACA repeal bill that is even more disruptive than previous GOP repeal plans.

In the name of “giving states more local control,” the Graham-Cassidy bill would convert current ACA federal funding into state block grants, using a complex formula that gives more funding to sparsely populated states over states with higher populations. It eliminates the ACA’s tax credits and cost-sharing subsidies for middle- and low-income marketplace consumers and ends Medicaid expansion by 2020. The plan would also end the individual insurance mandate while requiring insurers to cover everyone, a combination of policies that have historically resulted in astronomically high premiums.

Governors have a vested interest in preserving ACA federal funding and protections for residents of their state and should speak out on how the Graham-Cassidy bill would negatively affect their citizens.

President Trump’s remarks after the tragedy in Charlottesville have drawn criticism from Democrats, civil rights groups and others, including many Republican Senators and Representatives, world leaders, Jewish Republicans, business leaders (who forced Trump to disband his business advisory councils), popular mainstream press.

The House and Senate can censure a president, expressing their moral outrage and sending a message to the world that the president’s views are not those of our country. House Democrats have unveiled a resolution to censure Trump for failing to immediately name and condemn white supremacist groups and condemn terrorist actions in Charlottesville. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund has recommended that Congress demand oversight hearings with DOJ, DHS and other agencies about enforcement of hate crimes, civil rights laws and anti-discrimination efforts.
